A root canal is a procedure to remove infected pulp tissue from a tooth’s inner chamber or canal. This treatment is necessary when the pulp becomes inflamed or infected due to deep decay, trauma, or injury. If left untreated, the infection can spread to the surrounding bone and tissues and cause an abscess. An abscess is a collection of pus that forms inside the tooth and can cause severe pain. The infection can also spread to your jaw and other teeth. At Courtyard Dental, we offer comprehensive dental care for patients of all ages. Our skilled team is dedicated to providing the highest quality care in a comfortable and welcoming environment.
Before starting the procedure, the dentist administers local anesthesia to numb the area around the affected tooth. This ensures that the patient feels little to no pain during the treatment. The dentist creates a small access hole through the top of the tooth to reach the pulp chamber and root canals. Using specialized dental instruments called files, the infected or inflamed pulp and any debris are carefully removed from the pulp chamber and root canals. The dentist thoroughly cleans the inside of the root canals using irrigants to remove any remaining infected tissue and disinfect the canals.
After the canals are clean and dry, they are filled with a biocompatible gutta-percha material. Gutta-percha is a rubber-like material that seals the canals, preventing bacteria from re-entering. A dental crown is placed over the treated tooth to provide additional support and protection. The dental crown is custom-made to match the shape and color of the patient's natural teeth and is permanently cemented over the treated tooth. After the procedure, the patient may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. In a few days, the discomfort should subside, and the tooth will function like a natural tooth.
Root canal treatments relieve a severe toothache caused by the infection or inflammation of the dental pulp. Once the infected pulp is removed, the pain subsides, allowing the patient to resume normal activities comfortably.
The primary goal of a root canal treatment is to save the natural tooth. By removing the infected or inflamed pulp and cleaning the root canals, the dentist can prevent the need for tooth extraction.
The infected or damaged tissue is removed during the root canal procedure, and the root canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. This helps prevent the spread of infection to the surrounding tissues and reduces the risk of abscess formation.
